Bollards outside Upton Park Station

Candy Stones, 2025.

Site-specific bollards that replace the old traffic barriers along Green Street in Newham, East London. Made from coloured concrete, these sculptures were commissioned by Newham Council with AOC Architecture as part of their Shape Newham initiative to deliver sixteen public space projects across eight town centres. Permanently installed outside Upton Park station and near the historic Queen’s Market, they celebrate the identity of the high street, informed by a period of research collecting objects and foodstuffs from the local stores. In particular, their colour and shape take inspiration from the cakes and confectionery that fill the area’s many South Asian sweet shops.
